You are traveling to America from your native country at the turn of the century. You are required to have a passport when you arrive at Ellis Island. Here is some background information about the immigrant experience.
You will create an authentic passport with your photo, country of origin and method of travel listed on your passport.
Imagine arriving on American Soil for the first time! Notice the clothing and the possessions that people brought to this country. Notice the people who are your age. How do they dress and act? What hardships would you face if you have to travel to this country for several weeks on a boat?

Why do you think people would leave their homelands to travel to America?
Would you leave your family and all of your possessions behind to start a new life?
What would you do if members of your family were sent back home when they arrived at Ellis Island? Would you stay or leave? Why?
How would you feel coming to a new country where you have no money, you cannot speak the language and you do not have a job or a place to live? Would you become angry or determined to make a better life for yourself and your family members?
Here is a sample of what your passport will look like after you print it. (Remember, you will have to sign your name and fill out the passport in your handwriting. We will instruct you how to fill this out after the document is printed.)
